1. Know what you've actually got

You can't protect a device you don't know is there. Start with a simple walk-through of the office and note every smart gadget (cameras, speakers, printers, thermostats) along with its make and model and who uses it. That one list gives you the visibility to stay in control when it's time to update something or chase down a problem.

2. Change the default passwords right away

Most smart devices ship with a weak, factory-set password that's the same on every unit, and those defaults are published online for anyone to find. Swap each one for a strong, unique password, and store them somewhere your team can reach safely (a shared password manager, not a sticky note). It takes a minute and closes off one of the most common ways in.

3. Keep them in their own lane

Let the smart printer do its job, but don't let it reach everything else. A quick approval step before anything joins the office network keeps that in check. Ask two questions: does it really need the office Wi-Fi, and does it store any data? If a device sends or stores anything sensitive, that information should be encrypted, scrambled so it's useless to anyone who intercepts it, both while it's moving and while it's sitting in storage. Many devices have an encryption setting tucked away in their options; turning it on adds protection without slowing anything down.

10. Revisit it on a schedule

It's tempting to secure everything once and assume it stays that way. But technology moves fast, and so do the threats. A check-in every six months, revisiting passwords, network segments, and which devices are still supported, keeps you ahead without turning it into a constant worry.
